Labour Councillor: EDL member is ‘Rabid Animal’

By Joe Audritt

Labour Councillor for Harlow, Ian Beckett, has described a member of the controversial protest group, the English Defence League, as a ‘rabid animal’.

The comment came after a picture of a young Muslim woman, Saffiyah Khan, confronting an EDL member during a rally went viral online.

The scene captured the moment when Khan intervened in a confrontation between the EDL and a woman who had heckled a minutes silence held for the Stockholm terror attack victims.

Cllr Beckett has previously shared his appreciation for the investigation by police of fellow Councillor who compared disabled children to deformed animals, describing it as “about time”.

Not one to be shy, Cllr Beckett has often called out bad behaviour on Twitter and has wished Essex Police luck in their campaign to tackle hate crime.
